have always preferred to make my own gifts whenever possible. I feel that homemade gifts communicate so much to the person receiving the gift and that they are worthy of your time and hard work.

My parents-in-law were celebrating their 50th anniversary. I wanted to present them with something very special and memorable. So I wrote them an anniversary song that communicated just how much they mean to all of us and included details of their lives and precious memories they shared together. I then asked my two talented sons to sing it with me at the anniversary party in three-part harmony. We then presented them with a framed copy of the song surrounded with photos of the whole family. I included pictures of them as a young couple and as parents and grandparents. I had fixed up some of the older photos beforehand with my computer photo software.

My in-laws later told me it was one of their most favorite gifts and had proven it by proudly displaying it in their dining room for all to see.

I have been given many gifts in my lifetime and my favorites have never been the ones that cost a lot of money, but the ones that were made with me in mind and thought to who I am as a person. I am reminded, even now, of a simple gift of flowers that my husband-to-be picked for me from his garden. I walked into his home one night, after a long, late drive, and saw that he had fallen asleep on the couch. An arrow ‘drawn' in the carpet led me to the table where the flowers had been placed in a vase. Beside the vase lay a note saying, "I picked one of every kind of flower in my garden and none of them compare to you."
